William “King Mission” Ross

The world we live in is one that has undergone change on astronomical levels. The last decade has continued this change, but has done so with unprecedented advances in technology. As a result, it can be argued that the planet itself has shrunken to a point where the community must now be defined as humanity. With this said, I am proposing that the student body of SIT Graduate Institute invite Rev. William Ross (also known as King Mission) to share with us his experiences as he has extensive experience in working with street organizations, has created and manages nonprofit organizations that focus on cultural education, became ordained as an Afro-Cuban priest in Havana, Cuba and then as an interfaith minister here in the United States, and understands that all things are connected.

From the perspective of Social Justice and International Education, Rev. Ross focuses on combating the criminalization of a generation. A known member of the Almighty Latin King and Queen Nation, he has taken his experiences and has focused his energies on providing educational resources for members of street organizations and young people as a whole. Through such mediums as the published work entitled "The Globalization of the ALKQN" and www.ALKQN.org, Rev. Ross reaches a population that has grown to become an easy target for law enforcement to harass as well as non-affiliated citizens to wrongfully judge. Most recently Rev. Ross has lead the internal efforts against the recent actions of what we know now to be eleven misguided youths in the Bronx, NY where two allegedly homosexual individuals were tortured and beaten.

From the perspective of Service Leadership and Management, Rev. Ross owns and operates several nonprofit organizations that rely solely on the contributions of its executive board and not government grants. Operating under the leadership model best described as "Servant Leadership", Rev. Ross
not only invites and inspires others to join the front lines; he actively exists there.

From the perspective of Conflict Transformation, Rev. Ross has traveled overseas (Portugal, Spain, Italy, Puerto Rico, and The Dominican Republic) to address the issues of globalization as they relate to the culture we know as "Hip-Hop" and street politics organizations, and how issues such as immigration and social services play into the management of crime and violence, the practice of culture, and the
overall process of adolescence. Rev. Ross' also works with youth who are convinced that the only manner with which their voices can and would be heard would be through violence. This in turn allows him to transform conflict into consciousness and community empowerment.

In summation Rev. Ross’ work and experience is one that is diverse and touches on a number of fields that we here at SIT are studying. As a student, I’m sure that our body would be interested in seeing how our degrees can be intertwined and also practiced in a manner that not only serves our immediate community, but the international community at large.

Logistics

Discourse Applicable:

Service Leadership and Management
Sustainable Development
Conflict Transformation
International Education
Social Justice
Management

Date of Presentation:

Because Rev. Same rate of pay for employees and the equivalent in benefits. We retain rights to all the decisions regarding staffing, food sources, renovations. We paid a single fee. Legal has advised them to not show a copy of the contract

SITSA: accountability – who is Sodexo accountable to and who will make sure that World Learning and students will be involved in decisions which we retain rights to?

Bob: John will be reporting to Nancy, the CFO. John will be making recommendations. John will be listening for student needs

SITSA: If local farms (like the SIT farm) are not willing to sell, how can we assure the food will be local?

John: World learning will be purchasing and consuming the food, more local. Hampshire college does local food. Want to buy CSA shares from a local farm. Will buy excess produce from farms.

SITSA: If we moved to Sodexo out of a budgetary need, how does it work that we will still be eating local and organic without paying more? I understand that as a large corporation, Sodexo gets cheaper prices because of purchasing power so how does that help in a local food sense?

Bob: We have a fee contract.

John: In a situation where local is important we work on a fee. So sodexo does the cost appraisals for the institution but world learning has the purse strings.

Rob: Will use black river produce. The cost savings from sodexo comes in not from purchasing locally but from being able to negotiate for lower national costs.

SITSA: If this is a price difference, and everything is going to stay the same...

Bob: More than price, it's a service issue as well

Michael: the dean started all of this. He said that in other schools have larger consumption. He thought that Fitzvogt was not providing the best services but we just kept signing contracts with them without looking modernization. Variety of product, modernization. The campus community is larger than students. With Fitzvogt, we kept having to cut services. The facilities were not part of what they were initially looking at.

SITSA (Kristen): students are saying they're not concerned as much with quality, but with the business practices. Sodexo is more known for the bad business practices. We feel they don't represent the mission. Many of us are morally opposed to Sodexo.

Bob: Sodexo has taken steps to correct the wrongs that were brought up 7 years ago. They are trying. They have a pledge to reduce carbon, buying food locally. I think they've gotten it. We have general electric in every room on this campus. they have polluted a lot and aren't even trying to change. How is this different?

SITSA (Catherine): If you're excited about the changes, why wasn't it presented in a more positive manner? Why wasn't the whole process more transparent?

Bob: That was a mistake. It was handled extremely poorly. Sodexo has great track records with schools. The used to be in prisons but they got out of it 7 years ago.

Anita: on your website, the commitment to sustainability doesn't include fair trade.

Ray: It should be because Sodexo has their own fair trade coffee program. Esspreto. We have the only fair trade college campus in Oregon. Emma Willard trying to go fair trade, they have 260 students. Right now we buy equal exchange and they'll try to keep it.

John: We really bonded with Javier. We're going to get newer equipment for El cafe. I want to have you tell me how you want the program to be. I hopes to have a food committee. What products do we want, which farms do we want to buy from, etc.

Ray: For every award, we get slammed in a different ways. Seven years ago he was the chef on campus that did the presentation. Social implications, he didn't understand. Number 2 with latinos. We get hammered because we're the biggest.

SITSA: Accountability. As representatives of the student body, we take this very seriously. We're hearing words but we can't see the contract. We're invested with our dollars and we don't have any assurance that what you see is going to come to fruition. If we can't know that. We need a guiding document. As a public entity and as a

Can we get a document that shows us the rights that world learning retains. How are decisions going to be made? If you're so excited about this why can't we see the contract?

Bob: we can come up with a contract and world learning and sodexo. Needs to be a legal document. Michael wants to deliver a document. He's our advocate. May not be able to give us what we want.

Michael: The standards for Sodexo should not be more than what we have for other things about the school. There should be the same process for grievances that we have with everything else.

Heidi: levels of trust were already broken at the town hall meeting. Disconnect between what Adam Weinberg said and what the kitchen staff said. Why wouldn't that continue to happen?

John: wants everyone to forget about all of the problems. Variety increased, local food increased. As a human being he wants to put a smile on your face and that makes him happy. His job is to respond to student needs, he'll be on campus Monday thru Friday.

Heidi: I don't trust this.

John: I'm a human being. We're more than what you read on the internet. We're not an evil empire. The only way I keep my job is to do what you want.

Anita: what's the give and take with what we can get all year long?

Rob: we can't get things all year long. As a company we purchase food: Sysco, Performance Food and one more are distributors for us. We buy food from a lot of distributors. We don't buy produce from Sysco if we can help it. Avocado from Black river and Sysco are the same. Hates comment cards, he would prefer to have a Chef's table where he meets with students.

SITSA (Maggie): we have a current food committee, which we will be continuing. Keep in mind that El Cafe is a student initiated facility, everything that is there is there because students asked for it and worked for it keep it as student driven.

Michael: It comes down to trust. I'm worried but the minute something goes wrong, we're going to hear about it and that makes me worried. We want to build the trust back up. He wants us involved. This is a honest. He wants us involved. Bottom line is that Sodexo is here, what can we do to make it work from there? Work study students won't lose their jobs. We want to make this a seamless transition. He promises that he will answer to you.

Bob: sorry about the communication and the way this has been handled.

SITSA (Kristen): thanks for the apology, but the contract is important. I'm asking this because students want to see it. Why aren't you showing it to us?

John: the reality is that we don't always see these contracts in the larger world.

SITSA: We really want to see who retains the rights. That's the first contract, the other contract is about accountability. The financial part is only a part, it's the retaining the rights part.

Kristen: a brief run down of how upset the students are talking about the town hall meeting and the many levels of anger.

Anita: Regarding the exodus of students, some students would be willing to stay on campus if there is an option to opt out of the food purchasing. Is that a possibility. How feasible is that?

Michael: not an option. No budging. It's frustrating because I don't want to lose any students. Even though they're angry students have been very respectful.

Anita: the students who have made the decision to move off of campus would like to break the contract without the $450 fee.

Michael: it's kind of like breaking the lease. Finding it hard to believe that all the students researched the food service. Oops, eat my words. There was no breach, we didn't specify the food service in the contract. I get it.

SITSA (Maggie): The website needs to be changed ASAP for students who are currently looking at coming here. The capital contribution/investment/gift that Sodexo is giving, could you explain more?

Bob: Sodexo has agreed to fund $150,000 to use in any manner we would like. It's been our intention to engage the student body on how to use this money.

Michael: there are some areas in serious need of renovations. 3-5 year capital projects. I keep in mind that you'll always be here as part of the community. We're looking at areas but would like to look down the line. Residential.

SITSA (Maggie): is it structured like a loan or is it part of the bid?

Bob: It's a gift. But if we ask them to leave before five years we have to pay it back.

It's a five year contract but we can give a 60 day notice to leave, or Sodexo could give 60 days but if we break the contract in under 5 years we have to pay the $150,000 back.

Anita: what happens if people leave and don't pay?

Bob: you'd be hurting the local farmers.

Rob: hearing these things about Sodexo, I don't believe them. I'm anti-union because you shouldn't have to need a union. Sodexo fed the miners in chile. Rohini heads diversity. You can teach us as much as we can teach you. Will convey the message that Sodexo is still not doing the job.

Bob: my reputation is on the line. I started a socially responsible banking program that did microloans in Vermont. I deeply cares about the state, locally grown products, supporting small businesses, priority to women and minority owned businesses. My reputation is on the line and he doesn't want to risk it so I care about making this work with Sodexo

Heidi: similar assurances in the facilities and maintenance.

John: yes

Rob: greenware, those are going away because when greenware they now have petroleum products so they won't compost. So we want to do get green containers go to a token system for these to go containers.

SITSA (Maggie): if you're having a hard time finding green things, can there be a fleet of students that do approval etc.

Bob: yes

Rob: some comments about the unionizing at UVM . He's not sure if they're unionizing or what.

Catherine: in the second contract (the student written one), it needs to be enforceable. We need to give the students power to change things if they need to be changed. Legitimate power to change what's going on.

Rob: maybe I'm naïve but the accountability piece is so easy for me. Contract has to be a living document. This is a collaborative partnership between us and the students.

Rob: I would ask students to define local. And know the safety of our food sources. Use Annie from Black River to get more local foods.

Heidi: Is Cargill the beef purvayor?

Rob: I'll have to look.

SITSA (Maggie): can we assume local unless we're told?

John: yes

Rob: first choice for commodity foods is the farm center, then black river, then the big guys/

Michael: this dialogue is not done after this meetingthis is a continued dialogue.

Anita: commodity veggies, where do they come from?

Rob: as long as it's being grown, black river will try to get it local.

Anita: would like to maintain the pride and assurances that the food we're ingesting is not farmed ethically.

Rob: because of the mission of world learning. Partrick martin, rob met with him. Went to the field to fork meeting and felt like a leper, but felt great when Patrick said that in order for the slow food movement to survive, you have to get with big food producers like them (Sodexo). Slow food movement is important to me. Can't feed the country without conglomerates. We have a unique opportunity for the students to educate Sodexo, what if you forced Sodexo to change?

Bob: what you're hearing is a commitment to the mission.

SITSA: Need to come up with an accountability contract to give after thanksgiving.

Rob would like us to define sustainability and locality. And some specifics (blank % need to come from local food sources etc. ) be more aggressive and then have to renegotiate.

Bob will look at getting the sodexo contract without the finances. Bob will commit to

When can have the folks from corporate responsibility come and talk.

Anita: (gave some statistic about minorities in managerial positions at Sodexo, it was very low)

Rob: that's surprising, I'll look into that, it seems like that's untrue.

SITSAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04809182829149372663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1366726564598737412.post-87749071666385299072011-01-25T16:54:00.000-08:002011-01-25T16:55:40.741-08:00Questions for SODEXO Meeting
For SODEXO:

Dining Hall:

What will Sodexo do to ensure high quality meals for gluten free, vegetarian and vegan diners?

Will Sodexo commit to using menu/recipe suggestions from students?

Who is holding Sodexo accountable for the source of the food? - Food Committee?

How are local, organic and fair trade foods included in the contract?

What are Sodexo's plans for El Cafe? - in terms of products and developing the space?

Facilities/House Keeping:

What are Sodexo's plans for Facilities and House Keeping? - will they continue to use Green Products? Sodexo will begin as the provider at the end of the month as FV did not want to operate till the end of the current contract (which would have ended in Jan.)

Basically, there are fewer students which creates a loss in revenue which is a big deal for a small college. Last year there was a food deficit – because number enrolled and number living on campus is lower – and there needs to be a way to close deficit gap. Tony worked closely with Gene to close the complete deficit gap but could find no solutions. There is a need for financial viability and that is why there was the decision to sign with Sodexo, who will also provide SIT with some funding.

Currently there are 71 people living on campus 65 who are students (usually this number ranges from 90-100)

For the 2010 Fiscal year there was $32,000 operating cost loss: the projected loss for next year is $100,000.

SIT is only one of the four parts which make up World Learning (WL). Usually the institution draws from WL’s surplus; however those funds are needed to keep the overseas programs legally compliant.

There is real mandate for SIT to be self-sufficient.

Even though WL may utilize some of SIT’s resources, like the library, it is removed from SIT because it doesn’t use the physical campus.

Following his presentation, and prior to opening up the floor, SITSA member Kirsten explain to the group of students, that SITSA represents body therefore at this time member can facilitate the conversation but there are limitations as to how members can participate-perhaps leadership will emerge and determine what action will happen. Also she explained, that based on other issues that have been brought up on campus, it is important to remember this most recent issue is a symptom of a larger systematic issue.

Some of the issues brought forth during the open discussion were:

Funds, the money which is paid for food goes to food provider.

Housing money stays on campus-if housing drops that may cause a shift that housing may shift to Sodexho as well a food and facilities.

Transparency – with WL, faculty, administration, and students-Some students do not want those who are detached make decisions without including the voices of those who are effected. The individual neighborhood budgets were cut, so funds were taken out of SITSA’s funds and given to them. Ria also suggested we consider benchmarking funds, $500, for next year. If funds have been requested and approved through SISTA, the requesting party will receive those funds through Ria.

Erin (Int. Com) requested clarification on last week’s notes: If a funding request is over $200 there must be consensus reached by voting SITSA members. (Proper amendment will be made to minutes)

Halloween Dance (10 minutes)
There was brief discussion regarding the types of prizes SITSA might offer for the costume party, as well as what amounts those prizes should be. Members voted to allocate $100 for the prizes. A subcommittee (Catherine, Maggie and Tami) was formed to determine prizes and categories. It seems as though at least 6 members will be present for the dance.

Team-Building Tuesdays (3 minutes)
Members agreed to participate in a team building activity, outside of meeting time, such as $2 Bowling, at Brattleboro Bowl on a Tuesday night following the meeting. Setting the date will be added to next week’s agenda.

Campus Awareness (33 minutes)
Emily facilitated a discussion on ways to communicating with the student body. Some of the suggestions included: Bulletin Board, Suggestion Box, Facebook, Table Tents, and emails. Members decided to utilize all the methods.
Each member will send her a photo of his/herself to be placed on the bulletin board in the IC, so students can see who the members are and which neighborhoods they represent. Each member is to email Emily a picture by Monday 10/25. The goal is to have the Bulletin Board done prior to the Halloween Dance.
A Suggestion Box with be placed in key locations around campus. Each member is to make students aware, through neighborhood communication and classes, about the purpose and location of the boxes. The group will be flexible in handling the suggestions, based upon the amount and the nature of the subject matter.
Instead of creating a new Facebook, SISTA will utilize the PIM 70/MAT42 group on FB. Each member is responsible for “spreading the word,” to their neighborhoods and fellow classmates. Member will take a group picture on 10/26, to be posted on this FB group’s wall.
Emily will discuss with Student Activities collaborating our efforts to design and implement the Table Tent proposal.

Two other suggestions were made for raising student awareness regarding SITSA:
1.T-shirts for each member: A discussion took place regarding the creation of SISTA T-Shirts, and possibility of having a neighborhood contest to design a SITSA logo. This issue was tabled.
2.Open Meeting: Members also discussed having an open lunch meeting, with no Agenda to allow students the opportunity to voice any questions or concerns they may have.

Housekeeping (5 minutes)
If members would like an item added to the agenda, they must email Kirstin by 12:00 a.m. the morning prior to the meeting.
6:40 Meeting adjourned, next meeting is October 26, at 5:30 in IC 101SITSAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04809182829149372663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1366726564598737412.post-22298673371202847892010-05-14T16:25:00.001-07:002010-05-14T16:25:56.648-07:00May 14Meeting started at 12:40 in the Boyce Conference Room

1. Budget update: $550-$600 can be spent (this will leave some money to rollover to next year, which is tradition)

2. Discussions about Diversity Proposal took place. SITSA members spoke about the responses they received from the student body and faculty. Responses were mixed. Overall, there seems to be support for the Proposal.

3. Based on a consensus, the Diversity Proposal was passed. SITSA will be endorsing the document.

4. Libby Hill made a requst to fund Faiysal AliKhan's plane ticket. He will be speaking during lunch and at one of the Conflict Transformation courses taught by Tats. The request was for $400.

5. Olesya Boreyko made a request for an end of the year party. The expenses would go towards covering chair massages, transportation for students, food, beverages, and art/game supplies. The request was made for $400.

6. Matthew Abrams made a request to start a Seed Account that will support a community focused event. He presented a letter that would be left with Tony to explain the purpose of the fund to new students. The request was for $400, but ideally, Matt would like the fund to start with $500.

7. Voting: It was decided that all three requests would each get half what they requested at $200 each. Thus, today was the last day that requests will be accepted.SITSAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04809182829149372663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1366726564598737412.post-74059056652913606212010-05-14T06:50:00.000-07:002010-05-14T07:00:03.880-07:00May 7SITSA MINUTES MEETING DATED MAY 07, 2010
VENUE: BOYCE

The meeting was chaired by Brittany Smith.

There was a CONTACT Program request made (see below).

There was a request for $500 by Julia Fisher and Noah Baker Merrill from Conflict Transformation (CT) to be added to fundraising they will hold to gather the remaining $1500 which would be airfare for someone from Iraq (currently living in Australia). They stated that they would appreciate response to be by May 14th. The presenters added that CONTACT was often a program for people who were and would be in SIT. They also indicated that she would give talks that would be open to all SIT community. The presenters responded to all the questions that were asked for clarity. The request form was filled and filed for records.

Matthew Abrams also presented his request for $400 for seed money for a community focused event and indicated the deadline to be May 21st. In his presentation, he read a letter of invitation that urged joining of community projects as a way to cultivate and continue relationships. He further emphasized that the project would be a benefit to SIT students to expand beyond the SITSA through collaboration. The request form was filled and filed for records.

MAT request was shifted to the next sitting, May 14th, since the presenters were not able to attend the meeting.

Two students came to discuss end of year party plans.

There was a note made from IE about end of the year party since they were planning to have one. The neighborhoods needed to clarify the dates for parties that were already under way to avoid being looked at as though they would be competing. They also indicated the importance of connectedness/togetherness. They were requesting to consolidate the parties and bridge the difference. They stated that the aim of the party would be to mingle, and talk to souls, people never talked to and they believed it would be a legacy to future SIT students. Everyone showed to be worried that there was a communication breakdown in SITSA for 2010 final party. The presenters suggested May 21st and would ask for $300, though they would check with other neighborhoods for more donations.

Brandon Lee submitted the letter on diversity issues on campus. A copy was kept for records.

Changes were to be made on SITSA constitution. All representatives were asked to send an email out if they thought they would have to miss the meeting.

ISAP’s report involved that the international students would take part in the “Race for a Reason,” in greater numbers. They had organized a T-shirt and the process was about to finish.

Brittany announced that the minutes from previous meetings were sent to the blog with some changes made where necessary, and that they were open for viewing to all in the communities.

Brandon’s matter on the inclusion of people of color in the faculties and administration was still tabled. Brittany had handouts, but the matter couldn’t be discussed without Brandon. So, it was agreed to wait until Brandon availed himself.

SITSA members were given a sheet to check if they would be available for the times and days, in preparation for an evening meeting to be scheduled depending on the response by the members.

2.Adam Goldberg presented a fund request for $250 on behalf of the Band for transporting the band from Martha’s Vineyards. Voting was to be done as the last thing on the agenda.

3.Brandon gave a brief explanation of his case to lay a foundation for the people who had not been present at the beginning when the matter was tabled.

Barbara clarified that she knew why there was no diversity coordinator.

There was a consensus that there was a need to have a diversity coordinator to address relating to what Brandon hinted. That meant, as one of the presenters emphasized, the diversity coordinator would address among others polarized racial issues and tensions like it was done in one of the local high schools. Still on the diversity coordinator, one concern was the relation that that position would have in the SIT infrastructure.

The discussion furthered and it was said that the main issues that should receive immediate attention needed to be highlighted and attended to.

The following was the procedure to be followed: An initial letter should be forwarded with add-ons from other communities, as well as from individuals.

Closing the matter, Brittany showed the role of SITSA in tackling matters and that the association was open to suggestions, as long as submissions would be made. She also stressed that SITSA was ready to support all the communities. However, SITSA would the concerned to organize and submit something on paper for discussion and then, endorsement.

Brandon concluded that he would like to have the matter addressed and that there should be freedom to serve without being pointed.

Matthew hinted that the matter would need to be categorized into continuing conversation, synthesizing all the idea from the student body and the thoughts of diversity coordinator and/or committee be nominated.

It was confessed that there were time constraints, but there was to be a concrete, positive description before SITSA could endorse the final letter.

The letter would be revised and the document be submitted to SITSA by the next week. Votes would be conducted thereafter.

Brandon wrote his email address on the board (blee1911@yahoo.com), in case people had anything to add onto the final letter SITSA would receive.

4.The $250 request for the band was granted.

5.Any Other Business:
Other requests were postponed.
Jason announced that SITSA still had $1848.29 prior to the request that was just approved.

Emails would be sent about the evening meeting.

Brittany asked if people would rearrange and see what day(s) would suit, especially those where the majority of SITSA would be available. Brittany stated that the meeting would last for 1-1.5 hour. The venue for the evening meeting was Matthew’s place. Matthew gave verbal directions and would still email it to the rest.SITSAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04809182829149372663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1366726564598737412.post-65230134810941413232010-04-30T06:03:00.001-07:002010-04-30T06:03:55.313-07:00April 23, 2010SITSA Minutes of the Meeting Held on April 23, 2010
Venue: Boyce Building
Time: 12h35pm
The meeting was chaired by Brittany Smith.

I. Updates:
• It was stated that there might be another request for funding.
• Barbara admitted that there would be budget cuts which were still in progress and that the SITSA would be informed of such when they happen. That was her response to the speculations already by the other neighborhoods.
• ISAP reported that they would have a farewell party off-campus. They also had a T-shirt up and coming by the first week of May or even on the day of the race scheduled for May 1st.
• IE reported they would appreciate submission of the recipes for the coming event.
• MAT reported that TPRS workshop was well attended and that they were happy few of PIM group members had been part of the workshop.
• SD reported that they also have a T-Shirt underway.
• Matthew reported that he had a hand-out from Brandon, but wouldn’t distribute as that was not the agreement.
• Jess volunteered to be part of the students’ representative in the discussion to be held estimated to last for a maximum of 3 hours. This is in reference to hiring a new Dean and the interviewing process.
• A letter was to be written asking permission to have a student on the interviewing panel.
• Also, Jess and Matt were going to decide among themselves who would disseminate blog information to the students, so that students could easily see SITSA minutes, as well as know that they can come to any and all meetings.
II. There was a suggestion to have a dinner meeting and the set up was to be as follows:
• Discussion of issues that would be tabled and then dinner coupled with socializing
• Discussion will be focused on the role people play, inclusive language in the constitution, and the need for representation.
III. It was stated that SITSA would be the platform to get the voices from the SIT community heard. SITSA should be an outreach where there would be an open time of interaction, though the final decision would still have to be made by SITSA.
IV. Brandon:
• Met with MAT rep.
• Handed out a draft letter that explained in brief what he presented on April 16, 2010. The letter was read and given an expanded explanation. The draft of the letter was kept for record as reference. He left the email address for more inputs into furnishing the draft letter. Brandon was going to setup a Google Doc for SITSA members to use.
• Brandon mentioned he would appreciate that SITSA could stand by the burning idea he had said to representing the MAT, in particular for collective consensus from MAT community. He stressed that he would respect the SITSA’s rule in that regard.
V. Tony gave an insight on the following:
• Hiring people of color from the alumni would be a privilege and seen reasonable.
• He indicated that they had been successful in the previous years.
• He also mentioned that should any vacancy other than that of the TA arise, it would be relevant for the alumni MATs and PIMs to consider them.
• He even enlisted few names of those who took part for shorter periods of approximately 3 years.
• He emphasized that their presence was a great influence and experience, though they left due to varying reasons.
• He, then, shared with the SITSA members that he wished that the relationship would be sustainable.
• He hoped that something could be done for the sake of MAT program.
VI. Any Other Business
• Brandon emphasized that the draft letter he distributed had a view of his concern. He also showed that he wanted the matter to be initiated collectively than to be taken individually.
• Recommendation: That Brandon should hand in the final letter to SITSA that it would be taken to the neighborhoods/communities. From a discussion of about 5 minutes, follow up would be made in the coming weeks and to receive official votes.
• It was agreed that there would be objective thoughts around the matter. Again, it was highlighted that there should be someone to report and give clear, distinct roles the MAT Faculty had to do.
• The suggestions were shelved for the coming weeks, but other technology like googledot.com would be used to quicken the pace of review.
• It was also said as an advice that as the community representatives we should be transparent to share everything discussed with the communities we represent.
VII. The meeting ended.
Minutes compiled by Moloko R. Jeremy replaced Maegan. All the SITSA members were introduced to Jeremy. Brittany also briefed him about what SITSA mainly did like focusing on budget, and voting procedures whereby majority rule was the norm. Jeremy was granted an opportunity to ask questions.

2.There was fund request for $300 from soccer. Brittany excluded herself from voting as a member of the soccer team. Likewise, Jeremy did not vote for this same reason. The presentation was done. It was noted that that was the third indoor session with approximately 18 players registered. The game would involve the SIT and staff who played in the past. The presenter stated that there would be 1-2 games/week and that the fund would be used for facility and referees’ fees. She also highlighted that the games would serve as stress-reliever for students, and interaction with January students. SITSA fund would relieve the students from paying a lot for affiliation which was $45/player. She hinted that there would be no fees when playing outdoors. She was then released and would be notified of SITSA’ standpoint after voting that was to be done thereafter.

3.HR had a $65 request presented in writing by Stephanie Leite for a hotel room for the guest. The event would be on April 23rd, 2010. Jeremy expanded the explanation regarding to the request.

4.Voting was to be done, but Jason was asked to give the balance SITSA had. In a sense, all the votes were shelved until the presentation by Brandon was done.

5.Brandon presented his case based on the question of no people of color in the faculties in SIT. He indicated how in the last semester there were incidents of racial harassment issues. He showed his concern in that he wanted the matter sorted out in the previous semester, but couldn’t due to his personal matter that needed his attention. He requested the attention and support from SITSA to have the issue addressed. He showed to be ready to do his best. In his presentation, he also cited examples of where the places he had chances of visiting where people of color were part of the administration or faculty. He emphasized that he would appreciate clarity as to what could be accomplished in the faculties; be clarified on two important aspects including where the people of color are and when they would be part of the faculty. Brandon stated that he would communicate with MAT Reps in SITSA. He stressed that the matter about racism should not be seen as something personal at all. So, it required to be handled with care considering its sensitivity. Jason thanked for Brandon’s concern. It was then agreed that proper channels would be followed, especially because the matter was urgent looking into the approaching semester closure. As an agreement by the SITSA and Brandon, there would be a written document as a start to address the issue and for the records. It was clear that Brandon had an idea about who to contact in MAT faculty, but needed to hear what SITSA’s stance would be. Barbara gave clarification in that regard. Two names for consultation from MAT Faculty were mentioned: Elizabeth Tannenbaum and Alex Silverman. A recommendation made was that the matter would be moved to upper structures stressing the urgency, thereof. That meant, a written /planned agenda would be sent to the registrar prior to the meeting for her to prepare to discuss the matter to avoid a situation where it would look like an interrogation. That the Chief Academic Officer had just arrived on campus would not be a problem; it was shown that she would be accountable since all the deans sent reports to her. Brandon was asked to be present in the next SITSA sitting before he was released. Brandon was asked to have what he said in print.

6.The SITSA members agreed that there was a need to start town-hall meetings for open discussion where the students’ voice would be heard and the administration would also be invited. The representation would also include the different SIT departments.

7.Jason announced that $500 from Amy was returned to SITSA’s account and also the $70 would be returned. $2130 + $70 were the amount SITSA had as its balance.

8.Soccer and HR requests were passed.

9.It was announced that the next meeting would be held 12H35 in Boyce building.

10.The meeting was ended at about 1h25pm.SITSAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04809182829149372663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1366726564598737412.post-39855873630045371022010-04-22T23:33:00.000-07:002010-04-22T23:36:26.848-07:00April 2 MinutesMINUTES OF THE SITSA MEETING DATED 04/02/2010
VENUE: BOYCE BUILDING
TIME: 12h40pm

Brittany Smith chaired the meeting.

1.Updates:
Maegan had stepped down and the chairperson would still make a follow up on the minutes Maegan had.
Joseph Mukoroli sent his apology since he had a group meeting scheduled at the same time as SITSA.
Kirstin was introduced and welcomed again because SITSA meeting had only 5 members present in the previous week.
Brittany briefed the rest of the members with what transpired in the last sitting

2.SJ Mediation Request was done by Libby who indicated that their neighborhood contacted among others SLM and SD. She stated that though, there would be less contributions, she appreciated. Libby also said that she would thank if she would know the decision made so that they could start planning and functioning. She promised that there would maximum participation.
Deborah Lake (IE Rep) and Jess (MAT Rep) advised Libby to contact their neighborhood; they were willing to contribute to the funding provided Libby email IE and present her case at the MAT community meeting dated April 15th.

3.It was noted that SITSA would fund the end of the year party scheduled May 8th.

4.Rachel was able to raise funds and was not ready to withdraw request until the next week.

5.Jason announced that SITSA’s balance was $2230. Still on the same note, Tony indicated that there had been $500 not fully used for SIT vans during the TESOL conference. Meaning, the remaining amount would be returned to the SITSA funds. It was clearly stated that SITSA would then give SJ mediation $600 instead of $950 requested, especially because it was questionable if there would be enough participation.

6.Brittany gave a brief explanation on the reasons for SITSA wanting to hold town-hall meetings in relation to topics such as racism on campus, PIM and MAT and January and Fall students’ orientations.

7.It was voted that SJ Mediation would receive $600 as a final amount.

8.The meeting was officially declared closed by the chairperson.

Minutes written and compiled by Moloko Kgare (Internal Communications and ISAP Rep)SITSAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04809182829149372663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1366726564598737412.post-25850431246871230642010-04-22T23:32:00.000-07:002010-04-22T23:33:06.645-07:00March 26 MinutesMinutes of the SITSA meeting dated March 26th, 2010
Venue: Boyce building

1.The meeting was chaired by Brittany Smith.

2.The meeting could not follow the agenda due to the absence of several members of the association as a result of conferences and other commitments.

3.Each of the SITSA members was to give short introduction about names and neighborhood represented. Members represented were Moloko, Brittany, Matthew, Tam, and Tony.

4.Welcome and updates
4.1. Brittany welcomed Kirstin French who was replacing Monalisa. Brittany also stated in her welcome the procedures followed to pass a motion tabled and requests for funding from the neighborhoods.
4.2. Matthew gave an update about the conference to be held on May 1st in his neighborhood.
4.3. Brittany gave information based on the $2037 remaining funds in SITSA considering the end of the year parties that would need a portion from it, be it for both MAT and PIM group.
4.4. It was acknowledged that SITSA had lots of requests for funding in 2010.
4.5. The outstanding requests were postponed for the next sitting when other members would be present.

5. On the basis of not forming a quorum, the members decided to talk about one of the complaints that were raised, though unofficially; the issue of racism talked to Brittany by some of the affected members of SIT community. It was acknowledged that it should be followed up before it could divide the community. The matter would be addressed from the source by the Residential Assistants (RAs) of the dormitory affected. Tony would highlight the case to the relevant structures. Then, the SITSA would wait to handle the matter when time would show to be right in meetings to help the affected in readjusting and moving forward. We were advised to address the racism issue with a mindful of possibilities of isolating people when we would want them to cooperatively be a unit.

6. There was a concern about Megan’s consecutive absence from the meetings without sending any apology. The constitution was to be reread and then Megan be approached so that she could openly indicate whether she was still interested or would like to sent someone from her neighborhood to replace her.

7. He urged that we should invite various thoughts about how people feel concerning the idea, and stressing the concept of collaborating.
4.4. Deb is replacing Sarah Wann for International Education.

• Tony will add Deb to the mailing list.

• Refreshed policies for voting procedure: discuss concerns, fist-to-five, discuss if there are still concerns, final vote with thumbs up or down.

• Noted that for requests to pass everyone had to vote “yes” today because we only had five members present (five members is needed to make quorum).

• Jason presented current budget information for the start of the meeting: $7,180. For more details, please email him at jason.nusser@mail.sit.edu. He presented tables and graphs showing the breakdown of the budget (due to formatting issues, they could not be posted here).

• Heard requests from students (four requests in total). There were student representatives present for each request. After each request, SITSA had a chance to ask questions, and then, voting took place after all representatives left.

---Catalina Nieto and Cara Miller completed a Request Form to purchase art supplies for the Art Break on March 9 at 1:30 (during all-campus time). They listed prices for each item at their full cost; however, they intend to reduce costs as they go along and will likely need less money than they are requesting. Request was for $252.16.
*Request passed at $250.
*SITSA recommended that the artwork created is displayed more permanently, such as in a classroom.
*SITSA supports the idea of more visual art represented on campus.

---Amanda Jordan completed a Request Form to bring the Beehive Collective to campus on March 9 at 6:30pm. They are an artist group that creates social change with their work. Request was for $275.
*Request passed at $275.
*Note: This art event nicely balances the Art Break held earlier in the day.

---Wanna Crevecoeur completed a Request Form to purchase food and drinks for her Haiti Benefit for FOHRSE/Haitian Foundation for Social Rehabilitation. The event will take place on March 19 and is in its planning stage. She intends to send SITSA more information by email about the organization. The request was for $200.
*Request passed for $200.

---Stephanie Wilks-Leite completed a Request Form to bring guest speaker, Omar Sierra, from the Venezuelan Consulate in Boston. The event will be held on March 10, at 6:30 and go until 8:30. They will show a movie and then have a discussion. The name of the movie is "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." Request covered basic transportation, dinner, and hotel totaling $115.
*Request passed at $115.

• Total of $835 from proposal requests passed.

• SITSA decided on a new voting method for small requests. All proposals $200 and under may be submitted online and voted on via the SITSA mailing list.

---If the proposal is less than $100, two people must respond in favor of the proposal for it to pass.

---If the request is above $100 and no more than $200, three people must respond in favor of the proposal for it to pass.

---Responses must be made in a timely manner or else jurisdiction will be left up to Jason, the SITSA Treasurer.

---If anyone is highly against any given proposal, they can table the vote, such that it will become an agenda item at the next meeting.

• SITSA would like to offer a Co-President Position to a new January student if there is interest among them. Matt will get the email information necessary to send out a notice from Deb. We will ask January students to send their selected Representative (they are responsible for selecting their own person). SITSA believe that this will help with continuity and true representation of students’ interests.

• Matt requested fifteen minutes to discuss his event at the next meeting. This time will be towards the start of the next meeting. SITSA members would like further details sent to them ahead of time by email (e.g. names of speakers, dollar amounts, partnerships, names of students involved, etc.)

• It was noted that the Request Form was never handed in for the Halloween Dance as previously requested by SITSA members.

• SITSA has interest in supporting the MAT Dance. Decision regarding this will be made at the next meeting.

• Next meeting will be Friday at 12:30pm (room to be decided -- contact your department SITSA Representative for this information if needed). At this meeting, we anticipate voting on large requests that students on campus have mentioned one-on-one to individual SITSA members. Also, Co-Presidents for SITSA, if you cannot attend the meeting, but are currently on campus (i.e. not away because you are part of MAT), please remember to send out an all group notice via the mailing list as soon as possible.SITSAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04809182829149372663noreply@blogger.com0
